The Multicultural Blend, Brought on Stage

October 3-8, 2022

Located close to the Hungarian and Serbian borders, Timișoara is part of a cross-border area where several cultures and languages have been coexisting for centuries. To celebrate all the things people in this area have in common, the National Theatre of Timișoara has teamed up with the theatres of Vršac and Szeged for a project called Banat in Europe.

In the course of 6 days, three playwrights (Anna Varsányi from Szeged, Nikola Stanišić from Vršac, and Andrei Ursu from Timișoara) came together for a workshop coordinated by director Gavriil Pinte, to co-create a three-act play in which characters from these three cities cross paths both geographically and emotionally. As English was the working language, I was happy to be with them throughout those six days and witness how the play took shape.

The play premiered in December (the pictures below are from the rehearsals).
